who even needs a degree these days?

I was just scrolling through my chaotic newsfeed during lunch when I stumbled upon this bizarrely optimistic headline about mastering high-income skills by 2025 without a degree. Seems like everyone is all about ditching the college path these days. Seriously, who needs traditional education when you can have YouTube tutorials and a world of online courses screaming for your attention?

Alright, so let’s cut to the chase. What are these magical, degree-free skills that promise to line your pockets with cash in this dystopian future? Well, I don’t have a numbered list for you (surprised, aren’t you?). But I do have some thoughts. I’ve seen talks about AI everything—AI whispering, AI development, even AI therapy (no joke)—as if Skynet is just around the corner. I mean, okay, sure, playing nice with our future robot overlords might be a smart move.

Then there’s coding. Always coding. You’d think everyone’s born with a coding chip in their brains now. And let’s get real—how many times have you heard someone blabber on about the wonders of data science without really knowing what a data scientist even does? It’s 2023, and I still don’t get it, but it’s apparently one of those high-income skills we’ve gotta conquer.

Marketing without marketing degrees, financial advising without MBAs, and god knows what else. Like seriously, my cousin is hustling as some digital consultant or whatnot with just a certificate and voila! Making a killing. Damn impressive, really. Am I salty? Maybe a bit.

Also, who can forget the creatives? Graphic design, video editing, that grammatically creative writing nonsense (ironically exactly what I’m trying to do here), all these artsy folks had their chance to claim the metaphorical gold, and it seems like it’s not going away anytime soon. Oh, and that reminds me, did I mention the influencers? Because apparently, liking and sharing selfies and quirky captions is also a mad skill these days. What a time to be alive.

It feels like our careers are becoming more and more like some sci-fi gig, promising financial freedom with digital skills we pick up in a couple of weeks. But hey, if it gets us through the grind without the suffocating student debt or nine-to-five monotony, maybe it’s worth it. So here’s me, still trying to figure out my next move in this messy post-apocalyptic skill game. My brain hurts.

Speaking of advice—what even is the advice here? Perhaps, just keep learning random stuff from the recesses of the internet? Maybe it’ll pay off. My eyes still hurt from staring at screens. I need a break. Ugh.
