who knew ecommerce could start with zero dollars?

Have you ever just been so broke that investing even a single cent feels like you’re betting your house keys at a slot machine? Yeah, welcome to my life when I decided to toe-dip into ecommerce. So, I’m sitting there, probably on my third cup of yesterday’s coffee (is that even healthy?), staring at this overflowing pile of gadgets on my desk. Most of them are ‘what-the-heck-is-this’ tokens from years of hoarding. Truly the treasures of procrastination.

Anyway, the idea hit me like one of those late-night infomercials: Sell stuff online with zero investment. But how? How do you start slinging products online without crisp dollar bills to blow on inventory?

Simple. You don’t buy inventory. Yup, the secret sauce is not shopping, just hoarding. I mean, think about it. Who doesn’t have some old junk (I say junk lovingly) that could spark joy for someone else, or at least fetch a dime? Look around your place. The closet you’ve pretended was Narnia full of fashion regrets, yes, that’s a goldmine. Those weird gadgets we all bought during some midnight Amazon binge? Someone else could be having that same binge now. Fun times!

But listing this stuff was a saga. First off, platforms like eBay are your friends, albeit sometimes fickle ones. Turns out, taking half-decent photos of items isn’t as simple as I thought. Tried balancing a lamp precariously on a chair to get the lighting right (spoiler: it fell, and I’m kind of shocked it still works).

Now, while my makeshift studio was a trip hazard, turning my dusty goods into something people wanted was almost an art form. Descriptions had to pop—not just “blue t-shirt” but “authentic faded vintage, sky-blue tee perfect for a grunge revival” (whatever that means). Toss in some social media hype, and boom, I’m basically the next Jeff Bezos…okay, not really, but you get the picture.

In all this chaos, the virtual sweat and caffeine shakes, the point was—holy cow—it might just work. Somehow, this ridiculous plan of selling random items with no upfront cost was slowly taking shape.

So here I am, baby-stepping into ecommerce, on a wing and a prayer (along with a lot of night owl energy), making some coins off things previously destined to be dust bunny hosts. And who knows, maybe one day I’ll turn that initial “investment” of zero into something actually noteworthy.

Ugh, my brain is so fried right now. Need more coffee, or maybe some real investment cash wouldn’t hurt either…
